Death Cab For Cutie vuelven por primavera. Más Walla y menos Gibbard, por favor. -

Ayer fue el día en que todo el mundo hablaba del futuro album primaveral de Death Cab for Cutie (ya van siete). Ben Gibbard, el líder aparente de la banda, confesaba a SPIN que éste nuevo album va a sonar como si fuera «a testament to where we are as a band.» De igual manera, en un tono algo arrogante de quien se sabe caballo ganador, comentaba: «It’s not a guitar-based record. We’ve been into vintage keyboards and playing with that palette. We’re not adding guitars because people will be expecting them… I’m so proud of this album that at this point I don’t care if people don’t like it.»

Gibbard sigue siendo eje principal de la banda, especialmente a la hora de escribir los textos de las canciones. Éstos, siguen los mismos argumentos que dictaran en su anterior album, Narrow Stairs (2008). La nueva vida de Gibbard en Los Ángeles junto a su inseparable Zooey Deschanel (actriz y cantante de She & Him), parecen ser su inspiración preferente. Hace tiempo que, lamentablemente, Death Cab ya no suena a esa bonita entropía entre ácida nostalgia y pop esperanzador. Por suerte, siempre quedará la magia de su guitarrista y productor, Chris Walla. Todo lo que pasa por sus manos, se torna noble. Desde Decemberists a Telekinesis!, todo lleva su impecable impronta. Para el nuevo largo de Death Cab, la influencia de Walla se hace incluso mayor: «There are a few songs that Chris wrote all the music for. I cut and pasted and wrote lyrics and arrangements for them. This is the first time that we’ve had multiple compositions that started with Chris’s demos and not mine, which is exciting» comenta Gibbard.

Por tanto, hay lugar a la esperanza. «It’s a really dark record. I didn’t want to make that record again. I didn’t want to write those songs again.», comentaba Gibbard sobre su album predecesor, Narrow Stairs.

Han grabado en Los Angeles, Vancouver, San Francisco, Seattle,… «On this record I’ve written a couple songs in our downtime between studios and we start recording that brand new song on the first day of the next session, which is something we’ve never really had the opportunity to do before.»
En éstos meses de grabación, viajando por tantas ciudades, los miembros de Death Cab han vuelto a pasar mucho tiempo unidos. Se les vé disfrutando de nuevo y contentos por éste regreso. «I strangely feel closer to my bandmates than I ever have before. We’ve all kind of landed in a place in our lives, personally and professionally, where we can all get together and enjoy each other’s company and enjoy making music«, afirmaba recientemente Gibbard a la cadena MTV.

Su gira no promete ser muy intensa debido a los compromisos familiares de todos sus miembros. Vamos a esperar y cruzar los dedos para ver si en su paso europeo, pudieran dejarse caer por nuestro país. De momento os dejamos con dos de sus nuevos tracks recientemente interpretados en San Francisco por Gibbard. El primero de ellos, estará incluido en su nuevo album; el segundo, será la b.s.o. de Arthur.
